| Wetland Protection In the past large areas of wetlands around the world have been completely destroyed as they weren’t viewed as anything valuable. They were drained and other things such as homes, busineses, and roads put in their place. Today we realize that wetlands are very important to various species of plants and animals. They also offer us protection from wind and flooding. The issue of the wetlands being destroyed means that we will all suffer the effects. The efforts to protect the wetlands first began in the early 1970’s and they have continued through today. There is more backing for such efforts today than ever before. This is due to the amount of educational material out there about the benefits of the wetlands as well as what lives there. More people want to do their part to protect our environment and more future generations as well. In some areas such as Louisiana where there are tons of wetlands, they have done their very best to protect them. People use various types of watercraft to get from one point to the next. This is a great way to navigate the wetlands and to use them for the benefit of society. At the same time though they aren’t damaging the natural environment of the animals or plants that reside there. In the United States the protection of wetlands falls under the Clean Water Act. The protection of them is often overseen by the United States Fish and Wildlife Services. They have also continued to do research on the hydric soil that is responsible for the type of vegetation found in the wetlands. They also work to set up definitely boundaries between where the wetlands begin and where they end. This can be confusing to people who are fishing in the wrong areas from time to time. With signs in place though it helps to remove the doubts. Even with many programs to promote wetland protection it doesn’t always happen. Developers are often too concerned with the prospect of making big money to care about the future of the environment. It is important for continued awareness of the issue to take place. Let your local government know where you stand on wetland protection as well. What Are The Wetlands? Wetland are classified as areas of land that remain wet all of the time. Many people don’t realize how important these swamp areas really are to our environment. They may be annoyed by the smell of the water, the algae growing in it, and the pesky insects such as mosquitoes that always seem to be hanging around such areas. Yet there are plenty of plants and well as aquatic life here that depend on that type of environment for their survival. In order to help protect these wetland areas from destruction a great deal of attention and money is spent to promote them. It is believed that the more education a person has about what goes on in the wetlands the more willing they will be to leave it alone. It won’t be the ideal setting in their minds for a new business to be erected or roads to be built through. |
